MLB Winning Percentages
The 2011 season is 3/8ths of the way gone. Seems like spring training was just yesterday.
Anyway, I was looking at the standings and comparing them to last year. There are some teams who have made some great improvements this year and some that have dropped off dramatically. Here are a few of the teams on the rise:
1. Cleveland Indians +.153 – The Cleveland Indians won 69 games last year for a winning percentage of just .426. This year they have a .579 winning percentage (tied for best in the AL) and if they keep winning at the same pace will have won 94 games. That is an improvement of 25 games. It is nowhere near any of the biggest improvements of all time but last year the biggest improvement was only .093 (San Diego Padres).
2. Arizona Diamondbacks – +.149 – Arizona had a disappointing season last year but so far this year they have had a nearly 15% improvement on their winning percentage. They were leading the NL West until recently and are on pace for 89 wins which is an improvement of 24 games from a year ago.
3. Seattle Mariners – +.148 – Seattle was probably the worst team in the league (and one of the worst of all time offensively) last year. This year their pitching staff is doing a great job and their starting rotation is probably one of the best in the league. The offense is still near the bottom of the barrel but even the slight improvement should result in more wins this year. They are on pace for 85 wins which probably won’t make the playoffs but is an improvement of 24 wins. If they can add a couple bats they could go even higher than that with this pitching staff. They have won the last 6 series have played.
4. Pittsburgh Pirates – +.131 – The Pittsburgh Pirates are showing the fourth best improvement in the league but will still struggle to make it to .500 this year. They are currently at .483 which would put them at 78 wins. But if they can put together a couple good weeks and get some winning streaks in there the might just suprise everyone and break their winning season drought.
And of course there are a couple teams who are really tanking this year compared to last:
1. Minnesota Twins – -.218 If they keep this up they will have the 7th biggest decline in MLB history. Last year the Twins had 94 wins and won the AL Central. This year they are on pace for 59 wins and have the worst winning percentage in the league. They have the worst run differential in the league and are having trouble scoring runs. They will probably end up around 65 wins or so but that is still pretty terrible.
2. San Diego Padres – -.106 The Padres had a great year last year but now are back to a sub .500 team. They have a .450 winning percentage which isn’t atrocious but they had hoped for more this year.
